The New Zealand Rugby Union has appointed two key personnel to implement and manage the salary cap ahead of this year’s inaugural Air New Zealand Cup. Craig Neil, former Assistant Auditor-General for the Office of the Auditor-General, has been appointed Salary Cap Manager and former NZRU Player Management Advisor Cameron Good takes on the role of Salary Cap Advisor. In announcing the appointments, NZRU Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said the implementation and monitoring of a salary cap was a key component of the NZRU’s Competitions Review.
Under the salary cap, each of the 14 Air New Zealand Cup Provincial Unions will be allowed to spend up to $2 million on player salaries and other benefits in any given year.
“This is important if we wish to enhance competitiveness and create an even and exciting competition,” Mr Tew said.
The salary cap was last month given the green light by the Commerce Commission and Mr Tew said the NZRU was now working on implementing the salary cap regulations.
Mr Tew said the two individuals brought relevant experience to their new roles.
“Craig has extensive knowledge and experience in legal compliance and financial management while Cameron was instrumental in drafting the salary cap regulations approved by the NZRU Board,” Mr Tew said.
Mr Neil will join the NZRU at the end of the month.
