Lua Lokotui 2006 Hawke's Bay Magpie Captain, Lua Lokotui has been discharged without conviction but was ordered to pay teammate Matt Berquist $750 reparation for assaulting him.The assault followed an alleged fight in a Napier bar involving the two players' respective girlfriends in May of this year. The lock Lua Lokotui appeared in the Napier District Court on Monday the 30th after admitting assaulting first-five Matt Berquist on May 20. The court was told Lokotui and Berquist got into a fight some time after, and as a result of, the alleged fight between their girlfriends in a bar early in the morning. Judge Ian Thomas discharged Lokotui without conviction after hearing counsel Tony Sneel in chambers.
Mr Snell asked if Lokotui if Lokotui could pay the $750 for emotional harm to his teammate in instalments, saying the defendant was "not on an All Blacks contract". Matt Berquist Judge Thomas called the assault an unfortunate incident, in which Berquist suffered bruises and scratches as well as a great deal of embarrassment. He understood the two teammates had shaken hands and made "suitable amends" to each other. Accepting that Lokotui's career involved considerable travel, Judge Thomsa said he considered that the consequences of a conviction outweighed the seriousness of the assualt. |
