Hawke's Bay has taken control of its Air New Zealand Cup clash against Tasman and has convincingly won 41-6 in Blenheim.

The superior class of the Magpies was clear from the beginning of the match and it didn't take long for the visitors to chalk up the first points of the evening when first five-eighths Matt Berquist nailed a dropped goal from 45 metres out.

However, Tasman was able to hit back moments later when the Magpies gave away a penalty and allowed first five-eighths Miah Nikora to equal the scores at three apiece.

The deadlock was broken in the 10th minute when Hawke's Bay centre Jason Shoemark grabbed an intercept off a loose pass and sprinted 30m to score the first try of the night.

Berquist converted and took Hawke's Bay to a 10-3 lead.

The Hawke's Bay backline then showed some class as it headed down the left touchline before spreading it wide to the utilise the overlap it had created, allowing wing Jason Kupa to score try number two.

Its lead was increased even further when Berquist kicked another penalty after halfback Danny Lee was hit in an illegal tackle by Tasman prop Ben May.

A serious looking injury to Hawke's Bay second five-eighths Daniel Waenga stopped the clock and allowed Tasman some time to figure out where it was going wrong.

However Hawke's Bay was looking dangerous and soon scored again when a clever Berquist grubber kick was collected by wing Zac Guildford and dotted down underneath the sticks.

Tasman was able to kick another penalty on the stroke of halftime although things weren't looking good for the Makos as they walked off the field with the score sitting at 27-6.

Hawke's Bay took just six minutes to score in the second half when a well executed move off the scrum saw No.8 George Naoupu drive over the line.

Berquist slotted the conversion and boosted the lead out to 34-6.

Magpies prop Fakaanaua Taumalolo was sin-binned moments later when he deliberately used his hands in a ruck right under the nose of referee Kelvin Deaker.

Tasman was unable to capitalise on having superior numbers on the field as Hawke's Bay kept the pressure on and attacked the Makos line with vigour.

Guildford struck again in the 63rd minute when he scampered down the blindside to score his second try and effectively seal the win.

Although Tasman was looking good towards the end of the match and went extremely close to scoring, Hawke's Bay managed to hold them out and claimed a well-earned 41-6 win.

Hawke's Bay 41 (Guildford 2, Shoemark, Kupa, Naoupu tries; Berquist 5 con, pen, dropped goal)
Tasman 6 (Nikora pen, Goodman pen)
